Free Online File Converter

Welcome to our free-to-use image and 3D model file conversion site. You can convert your 3D model files to other 3D formats here, as well as images such as PNG and JPG files to 3D models, either by using a heightmap or by extruding your image. Our conversion tool can batch convert your files; up to 20 files can be converted in one go.

For those looking for our latest 3D designs and 3D prints, these can be found in our 3D printing blog.

Drag and drop your files here to upload or click the button above.
A maximum of 20 files can be converted at once.

Please note: Your file, when uploaded to our server, will be deleted 15 minutes after upload. Please download your converted file before this time.

How do the conversion tools work?

We built our tools from the ground up with the aim to convert the most common 3D model and image formats into the format of your choice. This is done using our own custom-developed converter components and parsers that aim to support all the functionality of the most common formats. We currently support the most common 3D model and image file formats; however, if your file format is not currently supported, please check back in the future, as we will be adding more formats in the coming months.

What can you use our tools for?

Our conversion tools are perfect for creating 3D models from simple 2D graphics, our PNG to STL conversion tool can convert an image file, such as a PNG or JPEG, into an extruded 3D model, which can then be printed out using a 3D printer or edited further in a 3D modeling application. Our tools can also convert between different 3D model formats, allowing you to, for example, convert a STEP file to a BLEND file, allowing you to edit your 3D model in Blender.

Practical Applications

We have taken a sprite from the old videogame Manic Miner and, using the PNG to STL extrude tool, created a full 3D model file from the image in only a few clicks. The tool works by analyzing the source image pixels one at a time and, based on the brightness of the pixel, creating the equivalent pixel within 3D space with a height value based on the brightness of the original pixel in the image.

A Color Extrude Example

Another example of extruding a 3D model using nothing but a flat 2D image is this example of using a color logo from the well-known Gameboy handheld console. Here we extrude the pixels to a fixed height, ignoring pixel brightness; however, the color of the pixels is transferred directly to the 3D model in the form of colored surface materials.

3D Printing

At Dorchester3D, we do a lot of 3D printing, usually with a retro/video gaming theme, and being able to print a 3D model means it needs to be in the correct format, a format that the splicer software understands. Currently, that format is usually either STL or 3MF, and many of our model files either come from a CAD editing application or the 3D model editor Blender.

In their native formats, the 3D models generated by these applications cannot be directly 3D printed; however, this is where our various conversion tools come into play. Our STEP to STL tool allows us to export models from many CAD applications and convert them into plain STL files. We also have a BLEND to STL tool for converting Blender models.
