Converting Images to Other Image Formats

You can convert your image files to other image formats, such as JPG, PNG, and more. When converting between formats that employ compression, here are some notes about how our tools handle this.

Lossy Compression Formats

Some formats, such as JPEG, reduce the file size by discarding image detail that may not be noticeable to the human eye. With most JPEG files, this compression is not visible; however, with certain types of images, it may be possible to see the compression artifacts.

If you are converting your image file to a format such as JPEG, our tool will do so in such a manner as to not degrade the quality of the final image and at the same time make use of compression to keep the file size as low as possible.

Lossless Compression Formats

With lossless formats such as PNG, the compression does not reduce the image quality; it simply arranges the binary content of the file in a manner that is more efficient when there are repeating patterns within the image.

If you are converting a file to a format that employs lossless compression, our tool will ensure no image detail is lost in the conversion process.

Converting Images to 3D Models

Our image conversion tools are also able to convert images into full 3D models using an extrusion process whereby pixels are mapped from an image file into 3D space and are given a height value based on their brightness. Here we have an example of this. The first image is a plain two-dimensional PNG file containing a retro video game character that is extruded using our tool to create a 3D STL model.
